Kolkata Knight RidersKolkata Knight Riders is among the eight teams to have surfaced in the start of the Indian Premier League in 2008. The team is owned by one of the most popular names in the country, Bollywood Megastar, Shahrukh Khan, through his Red Chillies Entertainment along with Mehta Groups, which is owned by Jai Mehta and another Bollywood personality Juhi Chawla. The Kolkata franchise was brought in around 357 crore Indian Rupees, making it one of the costliest buys among the 8 teams. Sourav Ganguly, nicknamed fondly as Prince of Calcutta, the former Indian captain, was made the icon player for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Ganguly captained the side and KKR made a grand an entry on the IPL platform with an emphatic win in their first match, powered by Brendon McCullum’s blitzkrieg of 158 runs, which continues to be highest individual score in T20 matches. However, the team performances tanked later on. Ganguly was KKR’s captain even during third IPL schedule, while McCullum provided the lead during the intermediate time period. However, with dipping performances in every season, Kolkata Knight Riders let go of Sourav Ganguly before IPL 4, which even Shahrukh Khan pointed out was a risky decision to make, considering Ganguly’s fan following in Kolkata.

However, the decision to make Gautam Gambhir as KKR captain proved fruitful when KKR made it to the play-offs for fourth IPL and clinched their maiden IPL title in 2012 IPL 5. For 2013’s IPL 6, which is to happen between April 3 and May 26, KKR will be the defending champions and also with 2 home grounds. Eden Ground in Kolkata, which is the biggest cricket stadium in India and one of the biggest in Asia, has been the home turf for Kolkata Knight Riders for last 5 seasons, except for IPL 2 which took place in South Africa. However, the title for KKR’s home ground will be shared by Eden Garden with Jharkhand State Cricket Association international stadium of Ranchi during IPL 6.

Eden Garden with seating capacity of 90,000 will be hosting 7 of the 9 home matches for KKR while JSCA with seating capacity of 40,000 gets to host the remaining 2 matches. For IPL 6 schedule, Kolkata Knight Riders have reserved 22 players which include 10 overseas players. After having retained these players, KKR is left with a money bag of 2.1 million US Dollars to spend during the player auctions.
